Silver Spring is an unincorporated area and census-designated place that resides in Montgomery County, Maryland, and is estimated as the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia and Germantown. The oldest, and most urbanized southernmost area of Silver Spring are a major business hub that lies at the north apex of Washington D.C. The name of Silver Spring originates from a mica-flecked spring discovered in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, who bought much of the surrounding area.
